ERP projects should be value-oriented and focused on outcomes not outputs.
A Value-Oriented project is focused on value generating outcomes rather than simply solution output deliverables.
This is really no different from the old marketing mantra ... feature-function-benefit .. in that what matters is less the feature and function deliverables but the benefit gained by the customer/consumer of the product.
In my experience, too few ERP selection and implementation projects start by defining their outcomes and instead focus on outputs, which are generally easier to define and to evaluate in terms of delivery.
The focus on outcomes also demands that the perspective of the ERP consumer and business partners impacted by the system is paramount in terms of understanding how to define the what, why and how of outcomes.
